Affiliate Marketing, Is It Still A Viable Business Model?

Affiliate Marketing By Linda Ryckman

One of the ways to make money online is affiliate marketing. This is a marketing practice in which a business rewards you for each visitor or customer you bring to their site through your marketing efforts.

You can be rewarded for the completion of an offer, and the referral of others to the site. This reward can be cash – set amount for each referral or a percentage amount.

There are also sites that offer gifts or points towards gifts for referring customers to their site.

Affiliate marketing is one of the largest growth industries on the Internet, it is estimated that in 2006 affiliates worldwide earned approximately US$6.5 billion from a variety of sources.

Affiliate marketing has become a big business on the internet today, and you can make money online with this method. Affiliate marketing is just using one website to drive traffic to another.

This form of online marketing, which is frequently overlooked by advertisers, can play a significant role in e-retailers’ marketing strategies.

The concept of revenue sharing-paying commission for referred business has been around for a very long time and predates affiliate marketing and the Internet. The translation of the revenue share principles to mainstream e-commerce has been a mainstay on the Internet for many years.

Amazon.com (Amazon) launched its associate program in July 1996. Amazon associates could place banner or text links on their site for individual books, or link directly to the Amazon home page.

Many merchants favor affiliate marketing in most cases it uses a “pay for performance” model, which means that the merchant does not incur any marketing expense.

Many businesses owe much of their success to this marketing technique, and one notable example being Amazon.com.

There are an increased number of Internet businesses and an increased number of people that trust the current technology enough to shop and do business online.

This allows many more opportunities for affiliate marketing and to generate a considerable amount of profit.

There are three primary ways to locate affiliate programs for a target website:
1. Affiliate program directories
2. Large affiliate networks that provide the platform for dozens or even hundreds of advertisers
3. The target website itself. (Websites that offer an affiliate program often have a link titled “affiliate program”, “affiliates”, “referral program”, or “webmasters”-usually in the footer or “About” section of the website.)

Affiliates marketers starting using the pay per click advertising earlier on in their development.

In 2000 Google launched its pay per click service, this alone is responsible for the widespread use and acceptance of pay per click as an advertising channel. An increasing number of merchants engage in pay per click advertising.

There are a number of e-learning sites where you can get a lot of information on working with affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing – Increase Your Income Online

How To Continually Grow Your Affiliate Checks

The promise of earning profits without really doing much of anything has enticed a lot of people towards affiliate marketing. But does affiliate marketing really work this way?

As an affiliate, all that is required of you is to simply place the merchant’s ad on your website. Then after that, you virtually do nothing but wait for anyone to click on the merchant’s ad and later collect your profits.

Easy, right? Well, not quite often.

Many affiliates earn almost nothing from their affiliate programs simply because they do nothing.

Remember that affiliate marketing is but another form of marketing, and you’ll definitely need to market your merchant’s product for you to earn something.

Successful affiliates in any affiliate program simply don’t sit there and wait for money to come. Why? Because there is no money in simply sitting and waiting. If you want to be successful in affiliate marketing and if you want to continually grow your affiliate checks, you’ve got to do something.

Think of ways on how to promote your merchant’s business and products better. Think of ways on how to induce other people to click on the link or ad provided to you by your merchant. Think of ways on how to make your affiliate sales increase!

So if you’re new in affiliate marketing and you try to follow the easy go lucky pit that most unsuccessful affiliate marketers follow, then you’re definitely on the wrong track. But we’re not advising you to stop right there.

No. Rather, we want you to take some steps to make your affiliate program work better and gain more commissions for you. How?

Here are a few guidelines that may help you to continually grow your affiliate checks:

* Become an expert on your affiliate product.

You can promote your merchant’s product better if you know a lot of things about it. To become an expert, the best thing you can do is purchase your merchant’s product yourself. This way, you can tell your customers about your first-hand experience using the product.

You can even write a testimonial or a personal endorsement ad about it. But if any condition does not permit you to purchase the product, you can at least make a thorough research about it.

* Host your own website.

Or at least have a domain name that is short and easy to remember. You certainly wouldn’t expect a visitor to remember a very long and incomprehensible URL.

And if that’s so, you also wouldn’t expect him to visit your website any time soon. That means less traffic for your page and the less chance for your affiliate ads and links to be clicked.

It is also a good idea to create a private website and offer access to it to anybody who clicks on any of your affiliate ads. Visitors usually get interested with these private websites.

Private websites also gives you a venue to promote your back-end affiliate products.

* Write your own affiliate ads.

Many merchants usually wouldn’t mind if you write and design your own ads for their products, for as long as you ask permission from them and present them your ad before posting it on your site.

This gives you a greater advantage over a lot of other affiliates who must be advertising the same affiliate products.

* Participate in chat rooms, discussion boards, and forums related to your product.

If you use to ignore them before, then it is time for you to start focusing your attention on them. You can start your own chat or join an existing chat related to your product.

You don’t have to promote your affiliate product at once, but find the chance to advertise and promote it as you go along. The same would be true for message boards, discussion boards and forums.

* Create a free ezine or newsletter.

Ezines and newsletters are periodical publications whose aim is to inform a group of people about a certain subject. In your ezines and newsletters, you don’t always have to promote your merchant’s product for this may greatly annoy your subscribers.

Rather, find a way to insert your affiliate ads and links on some portions of the letter. Also, don’t forget to promote your ezine or newsletter on your website.

These are but a few guidelines on how you can increase your affiliate sales and continually grow your affiliate checks. Sure there can be a lot of other tips that out there, and if you think they would work, we won’t discourage you from following them.

What’s important is that you be able to find a way to: attract more traffic to your site, induce your visitors to click on the ads on your site, and be able to promote your merchant’s products even outside the boundary of your website.

If you can do these, there’s no reason for you to fail in affiliate marketing. Keep working on it, keep improving on it, and adjust as you go. Here’s to your success!

Basic Affiliate Marketing Strategy Tips

Basics of An Affiliate Marketing Business

Basic Internet marketing includes owning a website, creating blogs, ezines, email marketing, using proper keyword phrase, etc. to sell your products online.

1. Have your own website -
Having your own website is a basic step in Affiliate Marketing. Creating your own website is not necessary at first, but it sure helps these days. There are a number of different sites available free online that you could use to create your website. It may be as simple as setting up a free Blogger or WordPress account. You can set up free pages on My Space, Hub Pages, Wiki Dot, or Wet paint, etc.

Or, you could hire a professional to design your site if you could afford to pay a price. But it will be necessary for you to learn HTML at some point so that you could make changes on your site whenever there is a need.

Sooner or later, you will find that you need a good web hosting service for your growing sites. I use Hostgator for all of RGG Publishing sites.

2. Create a blog -
Blogs are one of the most recent and most popular means of Internet marketing today. You could write about your product or services on your blog. You could make use of streaming videos or audios to demonstrate your product online. Blogs set up on Blogger or WordPress are free. You get to advertise about your product without paying a penny and you could also give a back link to your website, which is allowed by most of the blog websites.

3. Advertise -
There are two types of Internet advertising – free and paid advertising. You could make use of both depending upon your budget. Paid advertising mostly includes pay per click advertising, classified ads in ezines, banner ads, purchasing hits to your website, etc. free advertising includes forums, blogs, classified ads, link exchanges, article directories, etc. where you promote your products or service to your target customers  and lead them to your site through a link to your webpage.

4. Ezines -
You publish your own email newsletter through an ezine, which is called electronic mail or email magazine. Ezines are filled with a lot of product information. This is one of the favorite venues used by Internet marketers for their online business.

There are free services that you can use for this but if you are serious about your business, you really need to get a paid service. I went the free route at first.

When I needed to change over to a paid service, many of the subscribers never opted in again. It is really costly if you nuke a list of thousands of subscribers. Better to go with the best on this one. Aweber Communications is the one I use and recommend.

Build up a mailing list of opt in subscribers to whom you send out your product promotions and sales and latest information about your products or services. Adding your website address in your newsletter gets you more traffic to your sales pages.

Email marketing on other website owners’ ezines can get you access to thousands of people about your online business for a reasonable price. You could advertise a landing page that offers valuable information or freebies in exchange for visitor’s name and email address. Placing a sign up form on every web page you create is also helpful in building your mailing list.

5. Keyword research -
Pick out the products you want to promote and then do your keyword research. Do your keyword research before you publish your website online so that you can choose a keyword rich domain name. Good keyword phrases will generate more targeted traffic to your site and therefore higher sales conversions.

A website carefully designed with good colors, chosen keywords, valuable content and good advertising will generate higher traffic and more sales.

High targeted traffic does lead to more sales and profits, but that will be covered in another article. For now, the basic fundamentals will get you going.

Learn Affiliate Marketing, Super Affiliate Handbook Review

Review of the Super Affiliate Handbook

After spending hours researching the best way to make money online, I finally settled on affiliate marketing. There are dozens of “how to” guides and websites online. I have read at least a dozen of them and purchased several programs. All of them have similar information and I have picked out valuable “nuggets” from each.

However, Rosalind Gardner’s Super Affiliate Handbook is by far the best, most comprehensive guide I have read. The Handbook takes you from start to finish and discusses a variety of ways to earn money online. Detailed instructions and many helpful tips are offered.

Rosalind is the ONLY one out there that I have seen who gives specific examples of how she earns her money online. She shows you her own websites and offers her own niche markets as examples. She uses her own specific experiences to illustrate the do’s and don’ts of affiliate marketing.

In this Handbook, there are over 90 specific pictures or figures that are provided to give you exact examples of what a webpage, website, spreadsheet or letter should look like.

There is also technical information provided such as how to set up a website or blog, inserting specific text links or html code and information about web hosting. This provides extremely detailed and easy-to-follow instructions which alone are well worth the $47 price of this ebook.

Super Affiliate Handbook also offers basic business tips as to how to manage your business by staying organized and keeping track of your products. It even has sample spreadsheets for you to copy and use.

In building my online affiliate business, I find myself referring to The Handbook over and over. I have even copy and pasted specific sections into separate documents so I can easily access that information.

The Super Affiliate Handbook runs a whopping 200+ pages and is fairly up to date. There is a detailed and clear Table of Contents to assist you in navigating through the Handbook.

Some of the other programs and guides I have reviewed or purchased are hopelessly outdated. Many of their suggested links are no longer active. While there were one or two of Rosalind’s links which did not work, the vast majority of them were current. The last update of the Super Affiliate Handbook was in early 2010.

This leads me to the only complaint I have about the Super Affiliate Handbook – it contains TOO much information. It covers pretty much everything there is to know about all of the ways to earn money online.

For someone like me who is just starting, it was pretty overwhelming. However, after I read through it completely one time, I went back and began focusing on the information that I needed to get started.

The upside of all of this information is that anyone can benefit from the Handbook – even experienced online marketers can pick up some tips and tricks from Rosalind Gardner’s book.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Super Affiliate Handbook can be your one stop resource for all things related to online marketing. This is a must-have guide for anyone beginning affiliate marketing. It will also appeal to affiliate marketers of all levels as

Rosalind Gardner giving away many of her secrets in this Handbook for a fairly low price. I even read one review that complained she was giving away too much valuable knowledge far too cheaply. I have to tell you – that is fine by me!

Affiliate Programs, Benefits Of Two Tier VS One Tier?

How to Use Two Tier Affiliate Programs to Your Advantage

To those who are not familiar with affiliate marketing, “two-tier” could be a new term to you but for those who are already involved in this kind of money-making experience; it usually means a larger and more passive stream of income.

Two-tier is an enticing feature of particular affiliate programs wherein affiliates are allowed to sign-up additional affiliates below them. Whenever the sub-affiliates otherwise known as second tier affiliates earn commissions, the affiliate above receives a commission too.

In two-tier system, the first tier of commission is just like in the usual affiliate program. The sole difference is that it has an additional tier/s or sub-affiliates, whereby marketers also gain a commission once the people that the additional tiers referred to the program generate sales.

If you want to use a two-tier affiliate program to your advantage and generate more income by encouraging sub-affiliates to sign-up below you, make sure that you carefully choose the affiliate merchant you are promoting.

Pick those merchants who generate a stable stream of high quality products, give high or just commissions, offer real time tracking, furnish you with a proven and tested advertising arsenal and a proven track record of treating their affiliates well.

It is also advisable if you engage yourself with a web merchant that has a user-friendly website which you can access anytime so that you can monitor your statistics including visits and sales.

And when possible, choose the one with powerful marketing tools which you can use in promoting their products for your own sales and your second tiers affiliates.

You’re just wasting much of your time and effort and worse, damaging your integrity when you promote poor affiliate programs because your visitors will surely presume that the product or service you are reselling must be low quality also.

That’s a big reason why it is important to pick first-rate affiliate programs.

Through these, you can not only build up a good relationship with your visitor, but also, you can easily get more second tier affiliates to sign-up under you.

Let’s recap and look at some of the benefits from two-tier affiliate programs:

First, your profit will increase due to increased sales from the customers that your second tier has referred.

Second, you will have a much broader customer base to which you can sell your products and services due to your second tier affiliates.

Third, you gain a more stable income because the customers referred by you and your sub-affiliates will probably develop a lifetime loyalty to your site and your product offerings.

Fourth, you have an army of sub-affiliates who will promote and resell your products and services to their visitors and subscribers.

Two-tier affiliate programs have been proven winners and should be the number one choice for budding affiliates. When you start gaining profits from your site as well as your two tier affiliates sales, your passive income streams increase exponentially.

Affiliate Marketing, How To Make Money Selling Other Peoples Products

Affiliate Marketing Is Just Making Money Selling Other People’s Products

A lot of people are now getting into online businesses and affiliate marketing either to supplement their “real world” income or for it to become their primary source of income.

Why? Because online marketing just provides them a lot of benefits!

First, you can reach just about anybody in the world who has Internet access if you market your products online. That means a wider market for you, which can translate to larger profits.

Second, setting up an online business requires only a fraction of the cost required to set up an actual business establishment, which means a lot of savings for the business owner.

Another aspect that has attracted a lot of people towards online affiliate marketing is the fact that one doesn’t have to have his own products to get started.

In online marketing, one can start making a lot of money just by selling, or even by just trying to sell, other people’s products. And getting started with this kind of marketing strategy is actually quite easy.

All that one needs to do is to set up an agreement with an online retailer or merchant, and after everything is settled, one can immediately start making money by selling the merchant’s or the retailer’s products.

Incidentally, the most popular and the fastest growing method of selling other people’s products online is affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing, in its simplest definition, is a relationship between an online merchant or retailer, who has products to sell, and his affiliates, who are willing to promote the merchant’s product on their website.

In a typical affiliate marketing set up, the merchant provides his affiliates with banners and text ads that links to his site. The affiliates will then get these ads posted on their website and they get paid whenever traffic or sales is directed to the merchant’s website.

Affiliates are often paid on commission basis, although other online merchants would opt to pay a fixed fee for the affiliate’s compensation.

Starting to make money online with affiliate marketing is relatively quick and easy. All that one has to do is to sign up as an affiliate for an online company that offers affiliate programs.

An alternative method, and usually an easier one, is to sign up as a member of an affiliate network—a network that hosts a variety of affiliate programs for different online merchants or retailers.

Signing up is usually free, although other companies and networks may require you to pay a particular fee. Such fees, however, are made as payment for additional services that the company may render, like providing you with tools and assistance to jumpstart your online business.

When you sign up with an affiliate marketing program, you are usually required to fill out a form containing information about yourself. Some affiliate programs may also require you to present the URL of your website and describe its contents.

This will allow the retailers to verify that you actually have a website with contents that are relevant to their products. Some affiliate programs, however, won’t require you to have a website. After filling out the form and all, you are then allowed to choose the affiliate programs you want to promote.

After signing up with an affiliate program and being an actual affiliate, you are now ready to start making a lot of money by selling other people’s product online.

How do you make money?

There are actually a number of ways for you to earn money as an affiliate, and most of these ways depends on the type of affiliate marketing program you’ve gotten into.

Many affiliate marketing programs compensate their affiliates in either of three ways: pay-per-click (PPC), pay-per-sale (PPS), or pay-per-lead (PPL).

In pay-per-click affiliate marketing, the affiliate is paid whenever he directs traffic to the merchant’s site.

PPS and PPL affiliate marketing programs work rather differently.

In PPS, the affiliate only gets paid when his referral converts into an actual sale. In typical PPS affiliate programs, the affiliate would usually get 15% to 20% commission for each conversion.

PPL affiliate programs work the same way, although affiliates are paid a fixed fee whenever his referral converts into a lead for the company.

Some affiliate marketing programs are two-tier programs, wherein the affiliate is also allowed to recommend other affiliates to the merchant.

This is where affiliate marketing other peoples products really gets interesting!

In such affiliate programs, the affiliate would not only be paid for the traffic or sales that he would direct to the merchant’s site but also for the traffic or sales directed by the affiliates who signed up with the program through his recommendation.

Yet another way of earning more profits with affiliate marketing is through residual affiliate programs.

Residual affiliate programs are affiliate programs where the affiliate gets paid a number of times for as long as the merchant keeps the customer the affiliate has referred to his site.

One form of residual program gets the affiliate paid a commission every time the referred customer purchases something on the merchant’s site.

Another form of residual affiliate program gets the affiliate paid a percentage every month for as long as the company keeps the referred customer.

With a lot of options available and a lot of ways to earn money, affiliate marketing is undoubtedly the most popular and the easiest way to make money by selling other people’s products online.

As to how much money one can get from affiliate marketing actually depends on the affiliate.

A dedicated and hardworking affiliate would certainly get more from the program compared to those affiliates who would simply sign up and forget about the program later.

More on affiliate marketing later.

Smart Marketing Works, Dumb Marketing Does Not!

I read this article by Willie Crawford while I was perusing The Internet Marketing Inner Circle Private Forum just now, and it contained so much teaching that I really wanted to share it with you. (You can check out the private TIMIC membership site here. If you join, look me up in there.)

Gone are the days where we send out emails and publish websites that do not target a specific audience. Willie explains it much better than I could so here it is.
—————————————————————————–

The End Of Dumb Affiliate Marketing
by Willie Crawford

One of the saddest things that I witness day after day is
affiliate marketers who really struggle to make sales. They
send out email after email, promotion after promotion, yet
often make very few sales.

This is not only sad, it’s also needless “practice bleeding.”
Making affiliate sales is easy when you know the secret. It’s
even very scientific and does have fairly predictable results.

Let’s look at what most affiliates are doing wrong, what I’ve
termed “dumb affiliate marketing” and how that can be easily
corrected.

Before I offend anyone, I should explain that when I use the
word “dumb” I mean untargeted.

I come from a military background, and I think of “dumb bombs.”
Those are bombs that are dropped off of an airplane and they
tumble unguided towards a target. They may or may not hit the
target but once they are released they get no guidance.

A “smart” bomb often has a built in navigation system, and
after it is dropped from an airplane it often flies a
precise, pre-programmed route of flight to a target – often
getting satellite GPS updates enroute. A smart bomb can
be dropped from miles away, and be steered right though a
window on a building that the pilot flying the aircraft never
even sees.

Your affiliate marketing can be just as on-target when you
acknowledge and harness just a little know-how.

Promoting an affiliate product no longer needs to be a
gamble.

First of all, you need to tap into data that is readily
available on which products are already selling. One
source of this data is the blogs maintained during many
affiliate sales contests. Monitor these to see how well a
given product is selling, and to see if you want to invest
your time and effort into setting up a protracted marketing
campaign. You can market many of these products after
the big initial launch is over – often with lessened
competition.

I personally also rely upon my network of friends who
readily share with each other which affiliate products
are proven sellers. Many of us are members of a Facebook
Group called “Affiliate Products Proven To Sell.” If you
are on Facebook, you can join this group for free by
registering at http://timic.org/APPTS

Many affiliates also struggle because they use marketing
methods that are outdated, and simply no longer work. One
newer method that works like CRAZY is using quality videos.
You can now have CUSTOM videos created for you for under
$50 each, and that includes professional voice talent. For that,

I personally use Jason Anderson’s team at:
http://timic.org/ProVideos

These are not PLR videos. They are produced from scratch
and are mini-commercials. Mine are 1-minute because, just
like your audience, viewers of my videos have short
attention spans. So, take a clue from the television
industry. They’ve mastered getting the message across in
30 seconds to 1 minute. You need to do the same.

Another fact that you need to “get” – a fact most
struggling affiliate marketers still refuse to acknowledge
is that your promotion needs to be for just ONE product.
If the purpose of a solo mailing or ezine issue is to
promote a specific product, then just mention that ONE
product in the email.

Without fail, when I’ve tried to promote multiple products
in an email, even if they were all free, overall response
rate significantly decreased. I think that it’s because
when you promote several products in an email, it comes
across as too desperate. Be laser focused rather than
using the shotgun approach.

Many affiliate marketers fail to make sales because they
promote something that they like rather than something
customers are ALREADY buying. With so many great products
out there, I do not believe in being the guinea pig. You
should only promote affiliate products where the product
owner has thoroughly tested market demand AND his
conversion process.

It’s foolish to put time and effort into promoting
unproven products when you can just pick the low-hanging
fruit by offering your customers the products that they’ve
proven to you that they want.

Given that often there are numerous affiliates for a
product that’s a proven seller, you may need to
differentiate yourself from all of the other affiliates.
One easy way to do that is to offer a valuable, related
bonus. I like using unique audio interviews or related
courses as bonuses.

If you’ve taken the time to actually communicate with
your subscribers and customers, your offer isn’t identical
to that made by others marketing the same affiliate product
anyway. Just the fact that it’s YOU, whom your clients
have grown to know, like and trust, that’s marketing the
product… makes it different. The difference is that
purchasing through your affiliate link is less risky.

That is one of the key factors in smart affiliate marketing.
Earn their trust and the sales come a lot easier. I actually
have subscribers email me doing a big product launch ASKING
for my affiliate link. Over the past 13 years, I have
built that kind of customer loyalty. If you work at doing
that, everything else will fall in place.

Now that you know the secret, it’s time to stop doing dumb
marketing. If your sales aren’t what they should be start
by looking at WHAT you are marketing. Is it something that
your customers really want? If it is, then next look at HOW
you are marketing it. Read back through this article for
tips on the profitable way to do that.

Increase Your Targeted Website Traffic With Information Product Giveaways

How Information Product Giveaways Can Increase Your Traffic And Your Email Subscribers

Everyone loves Freebies! It is no secret that people seek out information on the internet. In fact, the internet has revolutionized the way people find information. Many people turn to the internet for their daily dose of news, rather than television or newspapers.

A decade ago, publishing companies published huge encyclopedia sets and hired sales people to go door to door in order to sell them. Today, people can turn on the computer and find what they are looking for.

Whether your goal is to sell tangible products, digital products, or increase affiliate commissions, creating information products is a great way to increase traffic to your site.

There are many types of information products to choose from: you can offer a special report, an e-course, audio or mix of all three. You can sell your information for profit or give it away for free and use it simply as a method for gaining traffic for your affiliate promotions.

A special report is a smaller than an e-book, usually about 10 – 15 pages; these can be written rather quickly and work great as a marketing tool. Think about the things you have for sell, or the items you are an affiliate for.

Pick a group of complimentary items and write a special report around them. For instance, if you sell cosmetics, create a special report about quick and easy summer beauty fixes. Advertise your own products within the report.

On the other hand, if you are an affiliate for several items related to babies, create a special report that new parents would find interesting. Plan your content so you can input your affiliate links inside the report.

For instance, if you are an affiliate for a company that sells cribs, include a section in your report on how to find the best cribs, and insert your affiliate link in that area.

Simply offer one of these reports as a free gift for subscribing to your newsletter or other mailing list. Your subscribers will love the fact that they are getting something for free, and you will love the fact that your mailing list is growing.

You can also charge a fee for the information you are using to drive traffic to your site. For instance, if you have a website that focuses on helping other people start a home business, you may choose to have a subscription-based newsletter.

You can fill your newsletter with great content, affiliate links for various products; endorse your own information products, and various joint ventures.

Another idea is to offer a special report and audio on a subscription basis. Using the example above, if you have a website that focuses on helping others start a home business, you can feature information on time management one month, advertising the next month, hiring a virtual assistant the month following that and so forth. You can interview other home business owners and have a transcript made from your audio file.

People are definitely hungry for information and if you can provide them quality information that answers their questions, you will notice an increase in your traffic (and profits).
